200 River Street

Polis Studio was asked to design a mixed-use building for a location near the historic Walnut Street Bridge. The site presented a challenge in that it had three "fronts." The client wanted to create two buildings separated by an open-air plaza. The ends of the buildings were larger in mass to address River Street and Coolidge Park, while the overall mass of the building responded to the pedestrian bridge in creating an urban edge. Inspiration for the exterior proportions was derived from the character of the surrounding buildings, while the steel and glass bridge connector and metal panels gave the building a modern touch. Ultimately, the developer has exchanged parcels of land with the City of Chattanooga, and plans to build a similar facility within the Northshore.
