North Chickamauga Creek Greenway

The Trust for Public Land engaged Polis Studio to update the North Chickamauga Creek Greenway Master Plan created in 1989. Several large parcels of land were assembled by partnering agencies between 1998 and 2004 that altered the range of opportunities for trail locations. The scope of the investigation included a five-mile extension from Greenway Farms in the south to Hixson High School in the north. The update to the original master plan suggests access to an endangered wetland area, east of the large TWRA "Varner Tract." The proposed Greenway's proximity to Big Ridge Elementary and Hixson High School opens the ability for students to walk to an outdoor classroom that retains a level of biodiversity that is shrinking in the region. The Master Plan Updates received positive support from residents and public officials when they were presented in a July 2004 community meeting. TPL is currently leading an effort to acquire easements and approvals necessary to build the trail in the locations outlined within our plan.
